Patch Materials, Backings & Edges
Every patch type we produce, with the specs that matter when you're choosing. Use this guide to spec your next patch project or to share with a client trying to understand the options.
Patch Material Types
Embroidered Patches
Thread on twill backing, raised texture, classic patch aesthetic.
- Stitch count
- ~6,000–15,000 stitches typical
- Color range
- Limited to thread inventory (PMS matching available for orders 100+)
Best for: Heritage brand looks, athletic gear, uniforms, varsity jackets
Limitations: Fine detail and gradients don't translate well
Woven Patches
Tightly woven threads, no raised texture, thinner than embroidered.
- Detail capability
- High, supports fine text and detailed logos
- Color range
- Multiple thread colors woven in (typically 6–9 colors per design)
Best for: Detailed logos, small text, designs with fine lines
Limitations: Less tactile presence than embroidery
PVC / Silicone Patches
Soft rubber-feel patches, raised 3D effect, weather-resistant.
- Color range
- Full color, including gradients and 3D layering
- Durability
- Highest, UV-resistant, washable, won't fade
Best for: Outdoor gear, tactical apparel, performance wear, hats
Limitations: Higher minimum quantities, longer lead times
Leather Patches (Real or Faux)
Genuine or faux leather with embossed/debossed or laser-engraved branding.

- Debossing, laser engraving, foil stamping
- Aesthetic
- Premium, heritage, outdoor-brand feel
Best for: Headwear, premium apparel, executive gifts, outdoor brands
Limitations: Higher unit cost; color options limited to leather colorways
Chenille Patches
Fuzzy, textured patches in the varsity letterman tradition.
- Texture
- Soft, looped yarn surface
Best for: Varsity jackets, athletic letterman gear, retro/throwback designs
Limitations: Limited fine detail capability; bulkier than other patch types
Sublimated Patches
Photographic full-color print on white polyester base.
- Color range
- Unlimited, including gradients, photo-realistic imagery
Best for: Designs requiring photo-quality color, complex gradients, full-color logos with many shades
Limitations: Less tactile than embroidery or PVC; lighter feel
Backing Options
Iron-on backing
Heat-activated adhesive. Best for low-stress applications (apparel that won't see heavy wash). Not ideal for performance fabrics or items requiring high durability.
Sew-on backing
Traditional thread attachment. Most durable; standard for uniforms, athletic gear, outerwear.
Velcro / Hook backing
Hook side bonded to the patch; loop receiver sewn to the garment. Allows removable/swappable patches. Used in tactical gear and modular uniforms.
Adhesive backing
Pressure-sensitive adhesive for non-fabric surfaces (hard goods, gear, lockers, helmets).
Self-adhesive + sew-on (combo)
Adhesive positions the patch, sewing secures it. Recommended for production efficiency at scale.
Edge Types
Merrowed Edge
Folded thick thread border. Classic patch look. Limited to simple shapes (circles, rectangles, ovals).
Laser-Cut Edge
Sharp, clean cut to any shape. Allows complex outlines and custom shapes. Most modern aesthetic.
Hot-Cut Edge
Heat-sealed edge, no border. Thinnest finish; commonly used on woven patches.
How to choose
Start with the aesthetic, embroidered for heritage, woven for detail, PVC for outdoor/durable, leather for premium, chenille for varsity, sublimated for photo-realistic color. Then choose backing based on application, sew-on for durable apparel, iron-on for low-stress items, velcro for modular gear. Finally pick the edge, merrowed for classic shapes, laser-cut for custom outlines, hot-cut for thin profiles.
